Furuno Speed Log DS-85 is accurate and noise resistant. A high frequency oscillator (2 MHz) combined with sophisticated processing algorithms significantly reduces the effect of various noise sources such as turbulence, air bubbles and foam.

Accurate measurement of speed and distance through water

  • Precise and reliable
  • 2 MHz transducer with optimized beam width and angle
  • Measures speed beneath the noise layer in the upper water column
  • Excellent interference immunity
  • LAN connection (IEC61162-450) to other systems
  • The DS-80 transducer can be reused with the DS-85
  • The DS-85 transducer fits into the DS-80 valve/tank

DS-85 is a precise and stable Doppler speed log

Accurate long-term measurement of speed and distance through water is critically important for monitoring vessel performance. With fuel efficiency in mind, improved accuracy in speed and distance measurements through water can contribute to significant savings. A key challenge for traditional acoustic sensors is mitigating the effects of various types of acoustic noise. The Furuno DS-85 Speed Log is highly accurate and offers excellent noise handling. A high-frequency 2 MHz transducer, combined with sophisticated signal processing algorithms, significantly reduces the effects of turbulence, bubbles, and other types of acoustic noise.

Highly accurate readings. As a vessel moves through water, acoustic noise is generated in the upper water layers—commonly referred to as the boundary layer. This noise can affect the accuracy of acoustic measurements. The DS-85 penetrates this noise layer and measures speed through water (STW) and distance farther below the keel, resulting in more stable and accurate readings compared to electromagnetic speed logs.

EASY RETROFIT FROM FURUNO DS-80 SPEED LOG

When retrofitting from a Furuno DS-80 to a DS-85, the existing transducer can be reused. This makes it possible to carry out the upgrade in multiple phases over time. The DS-85 transducer has the same physical dimensions and fits the DS-80 valve, eliminating the need for dry-docking during transducer replacement. It also fits the DS-80 tank, though replacement in this case must be done in dry dock.

COST-EFFECTIVE RETROFIT ALTERNATIVE TO 3-AXIS SPEED LOGS

When replacing a 3-axis speed log such as the now-discontinued Furuno DS-50, we recommend combining the Furuno DS-85 Speed Log with the Furuno GS-100 Satellite Log. This offers a highly cost-effective solution. The GS-100 is type-approved according to IMO standards for Speed and Distance Measuring Equipment (SDME) and can be installed as a speed log. However, vessels over 50,000 GT built on or after July 2014 are required to have two separate devices: one for Speed Through Water (STW) and another 2-axis speed log for Speed Over Ground (SOG). Additionally, many high-class notations require the speed log to output alarms over a serial interface if the STW exceeds defined thresholds. The combination of DS-85 and GS-100 meets these requirements.
